AMELIA ISLAND HISTORY
Nestled at the northern tip of Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach boasts a rich tapestry of history dating back centuries. Inhabited since around 1000 A.D. by the Timucua Native Americans, the flags of eight nations have flown over the island since 1562, making it the only US location with a history so diverse.
Once a haven for pirates, playground for Gilded Age magnates, and haunt of bootleggers and shrimpers, this seaport village has evolved into a cherished vacation destination. Its allure lies not only in its miles of pristine beaches and abundant native wildlife but also in its vast expanses of protected state and local parks and trails, inviting exploration and adventure.
Today, the Fernandina Beach National Historic District spans more than 50 blocks, and features eclectic shops and a diverse mix of restaurants and lovingly preserved architecture, offering visitors a glimpse into its fascinating history and vibrant present.
