The Board of Directors for Fernandina Beach Main Street, Inc. is pleased to announce the hiring of Arlene Filkoff as the Executive Director of the newly designated Fernandina Beach Main Street program. The Board received 57 applications from around the country for the position. Candidates were interviewed in September and October.
Mrs. Filkoff was raised in Pass Christian, MS on the Gulf Coast. She spent her early working years as a part time employee in her father’s grocery store, the only one in that town for several years. She attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa where she earned a BA in English and a Secondary Teaching certificate. She taught school for three years in Alabama before starting her family. She has two daughters, Jennifer who lives in Colorado and Stephanie in Connecticut. She has one granddaughter, Karysa in Colorado.
Ms. Filkoff began working in corporate America after her family moved to Connecticut in 1979. She spent the next 25 years managing large organizations and large projects many of which required process change and large systems’ implementations. These positions all demanded that she lead these organizations through the process of defining their vision and establishing definitive plans for moving forward. Ms Filkoff earned a reputation in these positions as a leader of organizations which contributed in critical ways to the direction of the company. All of these organizations operated with multimillion dollar budgets. Her leadership ensured fiscal responsibility in every case.
Since buying their home here in the late 90’s, and finally moving here officially in 2004, Steve and Arlene Filkoff have both been very engaged in community activities, both nonprofit and City related. Ms. Filkoff has served on the Arts Council and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee. She has also, as a volunteer, assisted the City staff with efforts like internal process improvement. She has worked with local non-profits in a facilitator capacity to assist them in developing strategic plans, monitoring those plans and making course adjustments where necessary. Ms Filkoff has also served on the board of non-profit groups such as Fernandina Little Theatre, Friends of the Library and Joy to the Children. You might also have seen Ms Filkoff on stage at Amelia Community Theatre in 6 Dance Lessons in 6 Weeks. After 30 years away from the stage, she truly relished the experience.
Fernandina Beach is a wonderful community made up of wonderful citizens. Some chose it by birth and chose to stay; others found it later and also chose to stay. Regardless of how, we have all chosen this community and we all care deeply for it. Ms Filkoff’s vision for this community is one based on planned/smart growth, strong economic health, and a quality of life that is unsurpassed.
Arlene Filkoff has the background and experience to help lead us forward and do so with sound planning, decision making and implementation. We need to do it right the first time!
